Menu Updates FAQ

Menu changes are part of the week in restaurants, cafes and takeaway counters. This FAQ explains how to swap inserts, update prices and keep menu boards neat across A4 and A3 formats.

When a price board needs a new insert

Most menu changes start with a price shift, a new breakfast line, or a special that has to sit on the board for a few days. With snap menu frames, the front profile opens cleanly so the old print can be removed and the new sheet placed in the frame without tools. That is useful at service counters where staff need a quick swap before lunch starts.

For wall mounted frames and window displays, keep the update in the same size as the existing insert where possible. A4 suits compact specials and daily offers, while A3 works better when the menu has more sections or the lettering must stay readable from a small queue. If the layout changes too much, we can help with menu resizing and typesetting so the finished insert still sits properly in the frame.

  • Check the current frame size before ordering a replacement insert.
  • Keep the wording tight if the old design already feels crowded.
  • Use laminated menu prints where frequent handling is part of the routine.

Swapping inserts without marking the frame

The frame edge should lift evenly, then close again with the new sheet sitting flat under the clear cover. Anti-glare covers help when menus sit near a bright window or under strong indoor lighting, especially in Cape Town cafés and coastal areas where glare can be sharp in the afternoon. A clean insert also stays easier to read after a few changes.

If the print has curled, been splashed, or marked at the corners, replace it rather than forcing it back into the frame. Aluminium profiles are durable, but a bent corner or rough handling can leave the front edge sitting unevenly. We also supply short run printing for smaller menu changes, which helps when only a few pages need to be updated.

  • Lift the snap edge gently from one side to the other.
  • Wipe the cover before fitting a fresh insert.
  • Keep spare prints flat in courier packaging or a sleeve.

What to do when the menu layout changes

Price increases, new dishes and seasonal specials often affect more than one page. If a breakfast section grows, or a takeaway counter adds a longer drinks list, the old artwork may need more than a simple text swap. In that case we can proof the new version, match the print colour more closely and prepare the size for the frame or board already in use.

Menu printing sizes matter here because A4, A3 and poster insert printing all suit different viewing distances. A small espresso bar may only need a compact board, while a busy restaurant entrance may need larger lettering and a stronger visual hierarchy. Chalkboards can also work well for rotating specials, but they need a clear hand and regular cleaning.

  • Tell us which items are changing, not only the final total.
  • Send the frame size so the print lands in the right format.
  • Ask for print finishing when the insert needs extra durability.

Wall boards, window frames and A-frame stands

Different menu points need different hardware. A wall menu board suits a fixed ordering point, while a window mounted snap frame works well for passing trade and front-of-shop specials. A-frame menu stands are useful on pavements, in courtyards and at entrances where foot traffic needs a clear sign before the customer reaches the counter.

For outdoor use, the insert should be printed and finished with the weather in mind. Coastal humidity in places like Durban and Gqeberha can affect paper if the sheet is left exposed, so the cover, fit and finish all matter. Courier packaging also needs care, because a bowed frame or creased print will show as soon as it is opened.

  • Use A-frame stands for temporary specials near the entrance.
  • Choose wall mounting where the menu must stay fixed and tidy.
  • Keep replacement inserts packed flat until they are needed.

Getting a replacement insert ready for print

Replacement work is easier when the old insert is measured properly and the new copy is checked before print. Menu proofing catches spacing issues, line breaks and missing prices before the sheet is sent to production. If you work across several branches, we can keep the same style across Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Johannesburg, Durban and Gqeberha while still adjusting the local details.

Short run printing suits limited changes, while larger menu updates may need several sizes at once. If a board has already been installed in Milnerton, Bellville or Paarl, the replacement can still be matched to the same profile and cover style so the display stays consistent. That matters when the menu board is visible from the till and the queue at the same time.

  • Send the exact wording for the changed items.
  • Confirm whether the insert is for A4 or A3.
  • Include any colour matching notes if the old print must stay visually close.

Courier delivery for update packs across South Africa

Menu update packs often travel from our Paarden Eiland, Cape Town team to branches in other cities. Courier packaging protects the frames, inserts and printed sheets so they arrive ready for the counter rather than needing rescue work on site. That is especially helpful when a restaurant group needs the same update sent to more than one location.

Where the order includes frames, boards and replacement prints together, pack the items by branch and label the sets clearly. It keeps the handover cleaner for staff at the other end and reduces confusion when several menu versions are moving at once. our contact form is the place to send your update details, frame size and branch list.

Menu frame questions

Can a snap frame be updated without removing it from the wall?

Yes. The front profile opens, the insert lifts out, and the new print goes back in while the frame stays mounted. That is the usual method for wall and window frames.

What if the new menu has more text than the old one?

The layout may need resizing, re-typesetting or a switch from A4 to A3. That keeps the text readable and stops the page from feeling cramped inside the frame.

Do replacement inserts work for A-frame menu stands?

Yes. A-frame stands can carry fresh printed inserts or boards, depending on the style used. They are useful for specials, daily menus and front-of-shop notices.
