Menu Resizing

Existing menu artwork often looks fine on screen but shifts awkwardly in a frame. We resize layouts for snap menu frames, wall boards and A-frame stands so the text sits cleanly in the chosen size and orientation.

When the artwork needs a tighter fit

Menu resizing is the stage where an existing design is adjusted to suit the actual frame on the counter, wall or pavement stand. We work with A4 and A3 snap frames, portrait and landscape layouts, and artwork that needs margin corrections after a reprint or a new board swap.

The job usually starts when a menu has been built for a different size, or when the content has grown and now runs too close to the aluminium edge. We re-space the text, rebalance image placement, and make sure the visible area suits the anti-glare cover and the snap opening used on the frame.

  • A4 and A3 sizing for single-sheet inserts
  • Portrait and landscape orientation changes
  • Margin correction for snap frame lips and cover overlap
  • Artwork fit for wall boards, window mounts and A-frame inserts
  • Checks for cropped prices, cut-off dish names and awkward line breaks

What is covered in the resize

We do more than stretch or shrink artwork. The layout is reviewed for legibility, spacing, and how the menu will sit once it is inside the frame. That includes type size, line spacing, image scale, logo placement and the balance between food group headings and pricing blocks.

Where a menu will be printed for a laminated insert or poster insert, we keep the final size aligned to the sheet that will actually sit in the holder. If the frame is used outdoors on a window or outside wall, we also allow for the visual loss caused by glare, reflections and edge shading.

  • Text reflow for long item names and specials
  • Image scaling for food photos and icons
  • Price alignment so figures stay easy to scan
  • File preparation for print-ready output
  • Adjustments for chalkboard style menu layouts

How the resize work moves through the studio

Once the brief is clear, we check the current artwork and the target frame size. A menu built for an A4 holder does not always transfer neatly into A3, especially when a lot of items sit in one column. The same goes for landscape menus moved into portrait frames on a wall board or inside a counter display.

We then correct the layout, proof the new version, and set it up for print or digital supply depending on the job. If the menu is part of a short run printing request, the resized file is prepared with the right bleed, crop marks and safe zone for production.

  • Review of the existing artwork file
  • Measurement against the chosen frame or board
  • Layout adjustment and text reflow
  • Proofing before print or courier dispatch
  • Packaging for local or national delivery

Frame sizes, inserts and practical measurements

Menu resizing is usually tied to the frame hardware and the insert method. A4 frames suit compact menus and specials boards, while A3 gives more room for sections, icons and larger type. For takeaway counters, the bigger size helps when menus need to be read quickly from standing height.

We also keep an eye on the useful area inside the snap frame itself. Aluminium profiles, anti-glare covers and poster holders all eat into the visible edge a little, so the artwork must sit correctly within the safe area. That matters on wall-mounted boards, window frames and A-frame stands where the eye catches the outer border first.

  • A4 and A3 snap menu frames
  • Portrait and landscape insert layouts
  • Aluminium profile edge allowance
  • Anti-glare cover visual offset
  • Frame, board and stand safe area checks

Pricing is based on the actual resize

Pricing depends on how much adjustment the file needs, not on a fixed template job. A light format change is different from a menu that needs section rebuilding, new spacing, extra pages or a fresh print-ready structure for several branches. Where the menu needs menu proofing or colour matching, those steps are included in the quote request.

We quote according to the artwork condition, final size, number of inserts and whether the output is for laminated menu prints, poster insert printing or direct frame use. Courier packaging is added where the menu needs to travel to Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Johannesburg, Durban, Gqeberha or smaller delivery points in between.

  • Simple size shift or full layout rebuild
  • Single insert or multi-sheet menu set
  • Print-ready files, proofing and finishing
  • Packaging for local collection or nationwide courier

After the resized menu is in use

Once the resized menu is printed and fitted, the main concern is keeping the artwork readable and aligned when specials change. If a dish list grows or a pricing line needs to move, it is easier when the file has already been structured for the right frame size. That keeps later menu updates less messy.

We can also help with future menu resizing when a restaurant moves from one holder size to another, or when a counter board gets replaced by a wall frame. If the new setup uses chalkboards in one section and snap frames in another, the layout can be kept consistent across both formats.

  • Resized master file for later changes
  • Clean layout for seasonal menu updates
  • Support for board swaps and frame changes
  • Consistent type treatment across menu formats

Sending the right material to start

Clients in Paarden Eiland, Milnerton, Bellville and Paarl often send an old menu file plus a photo of the frame. That helps us measure the visible area and see whether the artwork is meant for wall mounting, a window display or a counter stand. A clear file saves time on the back and forth around cropping, page size and orientation.

If the menu is already printed, a clean photograph and a measured frame size can still help. Our contact form is the best place to send that information, together with the target size, current sheet dimensions and any notes about A4, A3 or a custom insert.

  • Old artwork file or a clear photo of the current menu
  • Target frame size and orientation
  • Notes on wall, window or A-frame use
  • Any specials or sections that must remain unchanged
